Versciaco

Overview

Hiking, skiing and cycling

In the heart of the Dolomites, Versciaco is a hamlet of San Candido with its own railway station. You can get there from San Candido by train in less than five minutes, by car or bus in less than a dozen minutes, or you can walk there in about fifty minutes.

On the outskirts of the village lies the well-known Monte Elmo ski resort. In winter, the snow-covered ski slopes extend to Val Comelico in the Belluno area and will be connected in the coming years to the Thurntaler slopes in East Tyrol. In summer, you can visit the Olperl Nature Park, home to a mysterious creature with big, bright eyes who lives on the mountain with his animal friends.

Just above the centre, on top of one of the most beautiful hills in the area, you can visit the Saint Mary Magdalene Parish Church: a Gothic-style Tyrolean gem where you can admire 13th-century frescoes depicting Saint Ursula and her group of holy virgins.

From Versciaco, you can head towards the Puster Valley on foot or by bicycle.
The Val Pusteria cycle path, known as “Pusterbike”, runs throughout South Tyrol. The Drava San Candido–Lienz cycle path, the most famous in East Tyrol, also passes through Versciaco. This route also includes a two-to-three-hour hike from Trentino-South Tyrol to Austria, crossing the border.
